The idea that at the smallest level matter is circular strings that have different fequencies.
This is a really cool theory. It's grown in popularity because if its true it could become the theory of everything that was so saught after by Einstein.

I've heard of it and I sounds fun and the equations seem to work, but the problem is they can't seem to find a way to test string-theory because it predicts almost the same solutions as the standard model for interactions at all the energy levels we can actually produce in our biggest and brightest accelerators. That aside, the idea that matter is made up of strings is fundimentally disconcerting. First of all, what are the strings made out of, the only strings we know of are made out of long chains of not-stringlike particals so far as we can tell. Furthermore, what are they vibrating in? Extra-dimensions, so we are told, but that doesn't actually explain anything. Finally, string theory is dead; it was replaced by something called m-theory which is basically string theory in 11 dimensions and all strings are replaced by what are called m's or membranes, which are best described as 9 dimensional strings. Anyways, I just don't like string theory [mostly because it insists on the existance of a graviton] which is why I'm going to study quantum physics in collage and prove it wrong.

"Sting" What about "string?" Was that just an old theory that was thrown out?

Read logan's post...it should clear that up.

Logan, I thought that the 11-dimensional string theory was string theory? Maymer, apparently you didn't really read his post...

m theory is string theory in 11 dimensions.

Logan would like it to be so because he thinks it's dumb... But this is the same person who doesn't believe in gravitons, so there.

Ha! Most physicists now agree with me! String theory is a worthless piece of shitsa!
Anyways, Gravitons do not exist.

I never said I thought that string theory was the theory they would settle on, I said it was the most intriguing. Anyways, what's the new craze in physics?
On gravitons: Every other force has a carrier particle, why in Hades name can't gravity?

On popular theories: I have no idea, I just read a bunch of stuff saying string theory is more or less bunk.
On gravity: Gravity is carried by the fabric of spacetime itself, it doesn't need any other intermediate carrier.

I think they've gone back to the Standard Model.

yes, and if I had two of them I could make a line... sorry, but my math prof. just explained to us that f1(x)=1, f2(x)=x and f3(x)=x+1 form a triangle and that the angles add up to 180 degrees... trust me, if you're confused you're not nearly confused enough

I am so tempted to go to the censored words list and change sting to string, but that might later prove inconvinient so... The title is so annoying.
