Post by JerOD on May 12, 2005 7:46:57 GMT -6
*"We reject the teaching that Christians should look for one individual to arise in the end times as the great Antichrist. The characteristics of the Antichrist as presented in the Scripture have been and are being fulfilled in the institution of the papacy (2 Thessalonians 2:4-10). We reject the opinion that the identification of the papacy with the Antichrist was merely a historical judgement valid only at the time of Reformation." -Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, "This We Believe"
*"This teaching shows forcefully that the Pope is the very Antichrist, who has exalted himself above, and opposed himself against Christ, because he will not permit Christians to be saved without his power, which, nevertheless, is nothing, and is neither ordained nor commanded by God. This is, properly speaking, to exalt himself above all that is called God, as Paul says (2 Th 2:4). Even the Turks or the Tartars, great enemies of Christians as they are, do not do this, but they allow whoever wishes to believe in Christ, and take bodily tribute and obedience from Christians." -Smalcald Articles
*"This teaching that the Papacy is the Antichrist is not a fundamental article of faith. . . . It is not an article on which saving faith rests, with which Christianity stands or falls. We cannot and do not deny the Christianity of a person who cannot see the truth that the Pope is the Antichrist." -Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod "Statement on the Antichrist"
*"You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace." -Galatians 5:4

JerOD, just because the WLSA says something doesn't make it true. If you really want to debate these things you should use scripture, not anti-catholic literature.
On the one thing you actually cited scripture for
I agree that salvation can only be achieved by Grace as a result of Faith. You seem to be forgetting James 2:18, however: But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. In other words, while deeds do not and cannot lead to salvation, they are evidence of Faith (which is necessary for salvation) and therefore it can rightly be said that if someone does not have deeds then they have not achieved salvation. This is not to say deeds are required for salvation, but instead that deeds are a natural and necessary byproduct of Faith which leads to salvation and that any faith that does not display itself through deeds is not really Faith and does not lead to salvation.
